They are wearing a navy blazer over a white T-shirt with colorful block letters that read \u201cFEEL YOUR FEELINGS.\u201d\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661-1024x626.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661-768x470.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661-800x489.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661-580x355.jpeg 580w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/189756064_hr-e1758910112661-610x373.jpeg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Jessi Gold (photo by UT System)<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Dr. Jessi Gold, <a href=\"https:\/\/uthsc.edu\/faculty\/profile\/?netid=jgold11\">UT System chief wellness officer<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gold recalled the moment she sought help as an <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">undergraduate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her friends and family noticed some changes\u2014she was skipping classes, seemed more reserved, wasn\u2019t spending as much time with her friends and, frankly, wore sweatpants a bit too often.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When she went to counseling, she was told she wasn\u2019t \u201csick enough\u201d to receive care on campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think it was just that I didn\u2019t have the words for it and I didn\u2019t really understand myself enough to advocate for myself,\u201d Gold said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, Gold is the chief wellness officer for the UT System, which includes responsibilities such as connecting campuses, supporting student wellness initiatives, addressing gaps in care and helping shape a culture where conversations about mental health are encouraged.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outside that role, she is also an author, researcher, educator and national voice on mental health, serving as a storytelling advisor for MTV and a member of the Mental Health Council for Rare Beauty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her experience seeking help in college motivated her career path.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI felt like the place that was my safe space landing wasn\u2019t as good as it could have been,\u201d she said. \u201cI always thought, \u2018Oh, I could do that better for people.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gold <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">added that her own experience continues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to shape how she thinks about student well-being today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUnderstanding yourself is a huge thing. It takes time. I am still working on that,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not something that you learn and you\u2019re done and you never think about it again. She joined UTC in 2020 as an assistant professor in the Counselor Education Program before moving into the Counseling Center, where she oversees a staff focused on student support.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur bread and butter is individual counseling,\u201d Webster said. \u201cWe also offer group therapy, crisis <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">services, workshops<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and drop-in hours.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNo problem is too small or too big to deserve help. We\u2019re here for you. The staff we have here are incredibly warm, empathetic and compassionate. They love being able to support students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A counselor is available every hour of the day for drop-in emergencies, and after-hours calls roll to a crisis line staffed by trained professionals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNo matter what time of the day you call, you\u2019re either going to get one of us or someone who can connect you to the right resource,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite steady demand, wait times are short.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe can usually get you in within a week, and two weeks would be the longest,\u201d Webster said. \u201cWe\u2019re lucky to be fully staffed. If you schedule ahead of time, you\u2019re going to get in quickly.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She said many students struggle with feeling a sense of belonging, and group therapy and workshops can help them realize they\u2019re not alone.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s such a quick way to build belongingness and that connection of, \u2018Oh, you struggle with this too,\u2019 while being with a trained facilitator and group counselor,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can come to our groups at any point. You don\u2019t have to commit to doing it for a full semester. Come when you want to, when you\u2019re able to and for as many as you would like.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/enrollment-management-and-student-affairs\/counseling-center\"><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Counseling Center<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a> <i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">located in University Center Room 128<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She has spent years helping students navigate <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">challenging<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> situations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy job is to help students figure out how to navigate concerns, work within the system and find the resources to support them,\u201d Hubbard said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SOS office, she said, can step in and notify faculty on a student\u2019s behalf if they experience a serious event that keeps them from class.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf students need to be out, they can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UTChattanooga&amp;layout_id=68)\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">fill out an online form<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s for those crisis events\u2014a death in the family or a health concern.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SOS webpage also includes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UTChattanooga&amp;layout_id=60\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201ccommunity member of concern\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> form, which exists for students, parents, staff or faculty who are concerned about another student. Reasons include but are not limited to self-harm behavior, dating violence, disturbing eating behaviors, excessive anxiety, housing insecurity, loss of a friend or family <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">member, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> suicidal ideation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStudents can refer themselves or a member of the community,\u201d Hubbard said. \u201cThen one of our team members will reach out to students, typically in the form of an email. Sometimes we call or text students just to say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re here. Please schedule with us.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf you need us today, you can come in today. If it\u2019s urgent\u2014homelessness, self-harm, safety concerns\u2014we\u2019ll get you in almost immediately. Even if you think you can handle this by yourself, the reason we exist on this campus is to help you. You\u2019re the reason I have a paycheck and a job. When you have had that success, tell your friends about us and that\u2019s where you can give back. You are not a burden.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hubbard wants students to know that SOS is not just an \u201cabsence excuse office.\u201d It also exists to help connect students with basic needs. Scrappy\u2019s Cupboard food pantry, the Student Emergency Fund, emergency technology loans and free period products are all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/enrollment-management-and-student-affairs\/student-outreach-and-support\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">SOS resources<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that help students during personal challenges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are that third leg of the tripod,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can stand on your own two feet, but sometimes you need extra support to stay balanced.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SOS is <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">currently<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> located in University Center Room 399 but will <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">temporarily<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> relocate to the second floor (former <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bursar\u2019s<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> office space) during construction after fall break. She first focused on sexual violence prevention and case management before becoming director in 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe Center for Wellbeing is focused on health promotion and a variety of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well-being<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> topics,\u201d McKnight said. \u201cWe have everything from mental health to substance use to sleep and nutrition resources<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ll of these components that we know support student success. Our goal is really trying to get this information in front of students so they can take care of themselves, find balance and know when to reach out for more support.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work is visible everywhere on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each fall, the center kicks off with events like goat yoga, a popular event that \u201cbrings a lot of joy,\u201d McKnight said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In September, programming focuses on suicide prevention awareness <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> helping students recognize warning signs. During the darker winter months, the center lends out light therapy lamps and brings wellness activities into residence halls for students who might not feel like going out.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These are just <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some of the ways the center connects with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> campus. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McKnight said the goal is to normalize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> tough conversations with students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe want to make sure that these are topics that we\u2019re not shy to talk about and to name,\u201d she said. \u201cPart of that is programming and being more outward about this. We understand that for some students, they may experience suicidal ideation or have loved ones who\u2019ve been impacted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019re then able to move that message forward and say, \u2018There are resources and help. There is hope. We\u2019re here for you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Center for Wellbeing also offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/enrollment-management-and-student-affairs\/center-for-wellbeing\/health-and-wellness-coaching\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">health coaching<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a one-on-one option for students who need help setting goals or managing stress but aren\u2019t sure if they need counseling.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSometimes students are just unsure about what that even looks like and might be more open to having a conversation,\u201d she said. \u201cWe might identify in that session that a referral to counseling might be appropriate. It\u2019s about bridging that gap and being able to talk with students and helping them get there.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another option is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/enrollment-management-and-student-affairs\/center-for-wellbeing\/collegiate-recovery-program\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mocs Recovery<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a peer-based support program for students navigating mental health or substance use challenges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA lot of our students will seek counseling and get their clinical support, but then pair that with finding peers through the Mocs Recovery Program, who they can talk to and grow with as they\u2019re working on getting better or maintaining their recovery journey,\u201d McKnight said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McKnight urged students to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">look<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for Center for Wellbeing events around campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe want to get this into students\u2019 daily routines so they\u2019re seeing us on campus, having these conversations and normalizing it,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students can visit the Center for Wellbeing in University Center Room 350, which includes a lounge equipped with massage chairs and coloring books. Our dispatcher answers the phone around the clock, so we oftentimes become that referral agency for finding who can best serve that person.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had officers intervene with students who were having some serious issues, and some who just needed a referral for someone to talk to.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holzmacher said help can take many forms, from getting someone to a mental health hospital or emergency room, to connecting them with a counselor or even helping with something as simple as car troubles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every UTC officer receives Critical Incident Team training, which means they are trained to handle situations with empathy and awareness. Holzmacher said part of building that culture starts with taking care of his own team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf we value the health and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well-being<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of our employees and make that a priority, oftentimes they in turn value those people they serve,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve tried to make sure our folks have regular check-ins and conversations. Police work has its own stressors, especially with shift work. Addressing that helps our officers show up better for students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The department also works to be approachable before there\u2019s ever a crisis. If you see an officer strolling through the University Center, riding their patrol bike around campus or walking a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/gunny-a-retired-k-9-finds-a-new-beat-at-utc\/\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">campus canine<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d it is often to connect with students and to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">simply<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> say \u201chi.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCommunity-related policing has always been a focus for us,\u201d Holzmacher explained. \u201cThe valuable things we do are normally when we\u2019re outside the car. We\u2019ve had issues recently where police are rushing through an area and that causes alarm, but we want it to be more of a norm that seeing a police officer in the building doesn\u2019t mean something is wrong.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe want students to know we\u2019re here for their safety and their success.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The UTC Police Department is located in the Administrative Services Building at 400 Palmetto St. The department operates 24\/7 and can be reached by calling 423-425-4357 (HELP) for non-emergencies or 911 for emergencies.
