Holmberg Professor of American Music Jonathan McNair described with intricate detail a piano composition piece he wrote in the Appalachian Mountains at an artist residency program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt goes from a kind of mysterious opening to gradually becoming lighter and clearer, then bigger and ebullient and uplifting and grand. Later, the music moves higher and becomes more tender and vulnerable&#8230;\u201d explained McNair, who has taught at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for 26 years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He demonstrated with his hands how the composition is played as the melody \u201cunfolds,\u201d from grand harmonies to \u201cquiet and kind of mysterious at the end &#8230; as if you&#8217;re going backwards from a big river to the headwaters into the tiny little spring that began it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The piece came together while staying at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences during the summer of 2019. He named it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l7e353BamTQ&amp;list=RDl7e353BamTQ&amp;start_radio=1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cRabun Gap\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">after a small local town.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the time, he didn\u2019t have any particular plan in mind for the composition.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, to his surprise, the song is featured on a Grammy-nominated album.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The nomination stems from \u201cPiano Crosscurrents,\u201d an album by New York-based pianist and composer Max Lifchitz, founder of the North\/South Consonance Ensemble. Created more than 40 years ago, Lifchitz\u2019s ensemble is dedicated to performing and recording works by contemporary composers from across the Americas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lifchitz first performed the song in New York City after selecting it from an open call for scores, later inviting McNair to collaborate on a studio recording.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supported by a UTC faculty development grant, McNair\u2019s composition was professionally recorded and added to \u201cPiano Crosscurrents,\u201d which debuted in April 2025.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe nailed it,\u201d McNair said. \u201cThe sound is gorgeous. It was a wonderful studio and a really good engineer.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Winners will be announced at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 2, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Lifchitz reached out with the news that the album had received a Grammy nomination, McNair said he was completely caught off guard.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNever crossed my mind,\u201d he said with a laugh. \u201cI never expected this, and I\u2019m happy. I\u2019m grateful it\u2019s not going to go to my head because I had no idea how the nomination came about.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Receiving a Grammy nomination in the classical music world is a significant honor, McNair said, even though it may not come with the same public attention as it does for mainstream artists.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe Grammys in classical music are important; they\u2019re just less of a splash,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody knows Beyonc\u00e9 and whoever, but it\u2019s a huge thing for us. If a classical soloist gets a Grammy-winning recording, that\u2019s great for their career.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While McNair has long practiced music composition and piano, he gave some of the credit to the location where the piece originated.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re in such an incredibly gorgeous setting\u2014the mountains, the waterfalls, the valleys\u2014all of this stuff is going to infuse your soul,\u201d he said.
