Sydney Zwart, a senior integrated studies major from Gallatin, Tennessee, came to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as a transfer student last year.<\/p>\n

Today, her work is one of the first things students see when they walk into The Hub\u2014the College of Arts and Sciences Student Success Center.<\/p>\n

Zwart recently painted two murals for the space at the suggestion of Student Success Center Director Erica Holmes Trujillo.<\/p>\n

\u201cSydney is an artist and works for us as a student employee,\u201d Holmes Trujillo recalled. \u201cWe were chatting one day, just talking about how white and institutional our walls looked, and I said, \u2018Sydney, can you make a mural for us?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cShe designed this entirely on her own\u2014both the mural and the selfie wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zwart laughed as she recalled that initial conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had been watching \u2018Severance\u2019 and I was like, this feels like the hallways in \u2018Severance.\u2019 They\u2019re very white and just kind of sterile,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Had she ever done a mural before?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was my first time; I had never done a mural, but now I\u2019ve done two of them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Zwart spent the summer designing and painting the first mural, which features Scrappy, and said it took about two months to complete. The second\u2014a selfie wall listing majors around an archway so students can take photos pointing to their field\u2014followed later and took a single day to finish.<\/p>\n

With the murals complete, Zwart thought back on how she ended up at UTC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was in middle school, I did a project on my future career and UTC was the school that I chose. I then kind of forgot about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

After finishing an associate degree in fine\/studio art at Volunteer State Community College, she wanted to leave her small town and branch out while staying close enough to home.<\/p>\n

UTC is approximately 150 miles from her hometown.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had friends in Chattanooga,\u201d she said, \u201cand I had visited people that I went to high school with who came here for college. I just fell in love with Chattanooga. I wanted to go to UTC.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding her footing took time, Zwart said, but The Hub changed that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took a little bit, but definitely working in The Hub helped,\u201d she said. \u201cI was able to connect with a lot of people through here. I\u2019ve got a really good support system here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She now plays that role for others. Holmes Trujillo described Zwart as a peer advisor who \u201cwill help these students navigate everything from choosing classes to class registration to tips and tricks with Canvas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy talking to students because I feel like they don\u2019t realize how many opportunities they have to take different classes,\u201d Zwart said. \u201cI feel like students appreciate someone who\u2019s on their level.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has also been able to talk to students about the advantages of being an integrated studies major. UTC\u2019s Bachelor of Integrated Studies<\/strong><\/a> is designed for transfer, traditional and adult students who want to build a pathway to a degree using completed credit and new coursework shaped around a goal.<\/p>\n

From a student perspective, Zwart said the program works.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt helped me to really focus my education on what I wanted to do\u2014art and education\u2014 not art education,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re able to craft your course schedule the way that benefits you in your future career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zwart said coming to UTC changed what she thought was possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s opened my eyes to so many different career options that I didn\u2019t even know I could pursue,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to be an art teacher and I didn\u2019t even know that was an option.\u201d<\/p>\n

She plans to pursue middle school art education and is exploring a one-year master\u2019s and teacher licensure pathway through UTC after graduating in May.<\/p>\n

Holmes Trujillo said the murals are not just decoration but a visible record of student impact within the space, saying that \u201cSydney has left a lasting legacy for us with her mural.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that the murals are up, Zwart said their visibility has not yet quite sunk in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe advisors will walk by talking to their students and be like, \u2018Oh yeah, one of our student workers painted this,\u2019\u201d Zwart said, \u201cand then I\u2019m sitting at the desk and they\u2019ll walk by and they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s actually her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Holmes Trujillo said the work is already drawing attention from people who walk through the space, and Zwart added that other offices have even asked about doing similar projects\u2014a result that, she said, that reinforces what she tells transfer students: leaving your first school is not an ending.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I\u2019ve gained so many experiences that I wouldn\u2019t have had before,\u201d Zwart said. \u201cIt\u2019s opened my eyes to so many new opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n
