<\/strong>Warren St. John, author of Outcasts United<\/em>, will be the guest speaker at Convocation 2012 on September 13, at 12:15 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Outcasts United<\/em> was selected as this year\u2019s First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) book. It is available in the UTC Bookstore.<\/p>\n

Outcasts United<\/em> is the true story of Clarkston, Georgia, where agencies resettled many refugees in the late 1980s and early 1990s.\u00a0 The Fugees soccer team brought together young men from many of the world\u2019s hotspots.\u00a0 Their home countries included Congo, Sudan, Liberia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n

Dr. Sara Jorgensen, Assistant Professor, African and World History, serves as chair of the FYRE committee.\u00a0\u00a0 Jorgensen encouraged faculty to use Outcasts United in the classroom.<\/p>\n

It is the second year the UTC campus has been invited to read a FYRE book.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s book was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind:\u00a0 Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope<\/em>.
