The Music Department continues the 2008-09 Fine Arts Season with two choral performances by University students.<\/p>\n
On Thursday and Friday, November 13 and 14, 2008 the UTC Music Department will present choral concerts at 7:30 pm on Thursday evening and 8:00 pm Friday evening in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center (corner of Vine and Palmetto Streets). The Men\u2019s Chorus, directed by Roland Carter, and the Women\u2019s Chorale, directed by Dr. Lee Harris will perform on Thursday evening. The Chattanooga Singers and Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Kevin Ford, will perform on Friday evening. Both concerts are free and open to the general public.<\/p>\n
The Men\u2019s Chorus and Women\u2019s Chorale will present a concert of classical and holiday music. Highlights of the program include the Palestrina \u201cHodie Christus Natus Est\u201d, \u201cSee That Babe in the Lowly Manger\u201d, \u201cGo Where I send Thee\u201d and \u201cI Saw Three Ships\u201d by the Men\u2019s Chorus, and \u201cMid-winter\u201d, \u201cThe Snow\u201d, and \u201cKing Jesus Is a-Listening\u201d by the Women\u2019s Chorale. The two groups will combine to perform Roland Carter\u2019s arrangement of \u201cRise Up, Shepherd, and Follow.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Chattanooga Singers and Chamber Singer will present an eclectic mix of pieces. Highlights of the Chattanooga Singers program include Seiber\u2019s \u201cThree Hungarian Folk Songs\u201d, Thomas\u2019 \u201cKeep Your Lamps\u201d, and Leavitt\u2019s arrangement of Israeli composer Nurit Hirsch\u2019s \u201cBashana Haba\u2019ah\u201d. The Chamber Singers will present two world premieres: Dave Brubeck\u2019s \u201cA Christmas Hymn\u201d and an extended version of Brubeck\u2019s \u201cTo Us Is Given\u201d from Pange Lingua Variations<\/em> with a new verse written by Dave\u2019s wife, Iola Brubeck. Other highlights include Dello Joio\u2019s \u201cA Jubilant Song\u201d, and Whitacre\u2019s beautiful Christmas piece, \u201cLux Aurumque\u201d.<\/p>\n Roland Carter, director of the Men\u2019s Chorus, is the UTC Holmberg Professor of American Music and is internationally renowned as an arranger of African-American Spirituals. Dr. Kevin Ford is the UC Foundation Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities.
