We couldn\u2019t be prouder of Mocs golfer Steven Fox!\u00a0 Fox made history on Sunday, August 19, when he won the U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado\u2014the first Mocs golfer to win a national tournament.<\/p>\n
The accolades continue to roll in for Fox.\u00a0 He was named the Southern Golf Association National Amateur of the Month for August.<\/p>\n
“This is indeed an honor,” Fox said. “It has been unreal learning what comes with being the amateur champion. It is awesome getting to share this with my family, friends and teammates.”<\/p>\n
Fox won the U.S. Amateur title in a 37-hole, come-from-behind win over Cal junior Michael Weaver at historic Cherry Hills Country Club outside Cherry Hills, Colorado.<\/p>\n
Fox\u2019s name was added to a trophy with notable winners who came before him: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who claimed his 1990 amateur win at Cherry Hills.<\/p>\n
A special reception for Fox was held on campus Thursday, August 23, when Governor Bill Haslam, Senator Bob Corker and UT President Joe DiPietro visited campus to high five Fox.<\/p>\n
Additionally, elected officials, faculty, staff, student athletes and classmates came out to show their support and pride in Fox\u2019s accomplishment.\u00a0 Fox was appreciative of everyone taking the time to attend the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo represent the Power C is an honor,\u201d Fox told the crowd.<\/p>\n
From his den on Lookout Mountain, Chancellor Roger Brown watched Fox with growing excitement as the senior business major calmly advanced.\u00a0 Brown called Fox\u2019s win \u201cone of the greatest events in UC and UTC history.\u201d He spoke of Fox\u2019s true grit and courage.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteven set a high bar for performance and sportsmanship,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n
Brown wasn\u2019t the only who watched the nail-biter.\u00a0 Senator Bob Corker told the UTC crowd he was \u201cglued to the television.\u201d\u00a0 With every putt, he found himself either \u201cleaning left, or leaning right.\u201d He called Fox after his big win.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has nurturing parents, because Steven had empathy for the person who lost.\u00a0 He was a gracious, empathetic winner,\u201d Corker said.<\/p>\n
According to the USGA website, the victory \u201chas earned Fox an exemption to next year\u2019s U.S. Open and British Open and a likely invitation to the 2013 Masters Tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
