Probasco, Jr. Chair of Free Enterprise hosted the event.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" data-attachment-id=\"7393\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2012\/10\/former-bbt-corporation-chair-to-address-financial-crisis\/johnallisonbbtbuilding\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"300,401\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;14&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Lee Runion, Black Horse Studio&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS-1DS&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;70&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;100&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.008&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"JohnAllisonBB&amp;#038;Tbuilding\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding.jpg\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7393\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/10\/JohnAllisonBBTbuilding.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>During Allison\u2019s tenure as CEO, BB&amp;T grew from $4.5 billion to $152 billion in assets.\u00a0 In March 2009, Allison joined the faculty of Wake Forest University School of Business as Distinguished Professor of Practice.<\/p>\n<p>Allison began his presentation, \u201cThe Financial Crisis:\u00a0 Causes and Consequences,\u201d by making five points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The current financial crisis was primarily caused by government policy.\u00a0 The financial industry\u2026 is the most heavily regulated industry in the U.S. and it\u2019s the one where we\u2019ve had our biggest problem;<\/li>\n<li>Government policy created a massive \u201cmisinvestment,\u201d a bubble in the residential real estate market.\u00a0 That bubble deflated, as all bubbles do\u2026\u00a0 The housing bubble \u201ctaught millions of people to do the wrong thing\u201d\u2014homebuilders built too many houses and homebuyers were persuaded to buy more house than they could afford;<\/li>\n<li>A number of large financial institutions called Wall Street made some very serious mistakes.\u00a0 If he had been in charge, Allison said he would have let those institutions fail;<\/li>\n<li>Almost everything we\u2019ve done since this crisis started, even if it helps to address it in the short term, will reduce our standard of living in the long term;<\/li>\n<li>And the real cause of the crisis is philosophical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Going forward, Allison sees \u201cmost likely \u2018stagflation\u2019\u2014some growth, higher unemployment, higher inflation.\u201d\u00a0 But it is the long-term prognosis he said students in particular should be very worried about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could go broke in 20 to 25 years,\u201d Allison predicted, unless measures are taken to change direction and address Social Security, Medicare, and other entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not politics, this is just math,\u201d Allison said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are in an economic recovery, but not a healthy recovery, according to John A.
