UTC had more<em> Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) Grant Program <\/em>proposals funded than any other Tennessee higher education institution.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->UTC projects recommended for funding represent 38 percent of all the ITQ projects funded.<br \/>\n<span class=\"smaller img_right\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/images\/grants-news-conference-005.jpg\" alt=\"Grants News Conference photo\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"\/><br \/>\nDr. Phil Oldham, Provost, Dan Barstow, President of the National Challenger<br \/>\nCenter for Space Science Education, Tom Patty, Director of the UTC<br \/>\nChallenger Center, Chancellor Roger Brown<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/images\/grants-news-conference-008.jpg\" alt=\"Grants News Conference photo\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"\/><br \/>\nProject Directors Tom Patty, Dr. Lauren Ingraham and Tracy Hughes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis demonstrates our commitment to grooming leaders in education and preparing teachers for their best classroom experience,\u201d said Dr. Mary Tanner, Dean of the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies. \u201cImproving the classroom skills of our teachers is a significant step in increasing learning and student achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Tennessee institutions to secure ITQ funding are Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Memphis, Lipscomb University, and the Memphis College of Art, receiving one award each; Tennessee Tech and UT Knoxville each received two awards.<\/p>\n<p>Four out of the five UTC projects will support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.\u00a0 Read more about STEM education at UTC: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/2009\/04\/06\/computational-engineering-candidate-promotes-stem-education\/\">Computational engineering candidate promotes STEM education.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromoting STEM education is a national goal of the federal government,\u201d said Chancellor Roger Brown.  \u201cThese initiatives help move Chattanooga and Tennessee toward that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The five UTC projects funded by the ITQ Program are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Project: \u201cPLAN of ACTion for High School Mathematics Teachers\u201d<br \/>\nDirector:  Tracy Hughes, Mathematics<br \/>\nAward:  $74, 679<br \/>\nDescription: In tenth grade, students take the PLAN test which provides critical information about a student\u2019s future college math readiness level.  This summer workshop for high school mathematics teachers will cover teaching strategies, a deep knowledge of math content and a firm understanding of state standards so they can use PLAN test results to benefit their students.<\/li>\n<li>Project:  \u201cMapping a Curriculum to EXPLORE in Middle School Mathematics\u201d<br \/>\nDirector:  Meg Kiessling, Mathematics<br \/>\nAward:  $62,709<br \/>\nDescription: New mathematics standards will be adopted by the state of Tennessee Department of Education for the 2009-10 school year.  This summer workshop will assist middle school educators in understanding the changes.<\/li>\n<li>Project:  \u201cMathematical Processes and Problem Solving\u201d<br \/>\nDirector:  Dr. Deborah McAllister, Teacher Preparation Academy<br \/>\nAward: $74,760<br \/>\nDescription:  This series of summer workshops will target improvement in teachers\u2019 mathematical process and problem solving skills.<\/li>\n<li>Project: \u201cSTARS in the Classroom:  Science Teachers Achieving Real Success in the Classroom\u201d<br \/>\nDirector:  Tom Patty, Director of the UTC Challenger Center<br \/>\nAward:  $74,536<br \/>\nDescription:  This summer professional development workshop will allow elementary and middle school teachers from the Memphis City School system to integrate and deepen their knowledge of science, learning and pedagogy through hands-on, inquiry based instruction.<\/li>\n<li>Project:  \u201cReading Nonfiction, Reading the World:  Preparing Middle and High School Students for Academic Success and Informed Citizenship\u201d<br \/>\nDirector:  Dr. Lauren Ingraham, Department of English<br \/>\nAward:  $72,253<br \/>\nDescription:  This summer workshop will introduce teachers to reading strategies, reflective writing, hands-on projects, and assessment methods designed to help teachers facilitate their students\u2019 understanding of nonfiction texts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To learn more about participation in any of the workshops described, please contact the office of Dr. Mary Tanner, Dean of the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies at (423) 425-4249.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/images\/STEMgrants.mp3\">WUTC FM 88.1 Chattanooga Around and About interview with Dr. Tanner.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) has awarded funding to five projects from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, for a total of $358,937.
