{"id":838,"date":"2009-04-09T10:45:21","date_gmt":"2009-04-09T14:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/?p=469"},"modified":"2009-04-16T15:39:27","modified_gmt":"2009-04-16T20:39:27","slug":"utc-music-department-offerings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2009\/04\/utc-music-department-offerings\/","title":{"rendered":"UTC Music Department offerings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UTC Percussion Ensemble, choral groups and the UTC Symphonic Band will be performing in the coming week:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Percussion Ensemble presents \u201cCatch the Groove\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monday, April 13, 7:30 p.m., the UTC Music Department presents the annual \u201cCatch the Groove\u201d concert by the UTC Percussion Ensemble at the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center, directed by Dr. Monte Coulter. The concert is open to the general public and free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the UTC Percussion Ensemble play many types of percussion instruments from all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Monte Coulter, the group\u2019s director, says the \u201c\u2018Catch the Groove\u2019 percussion concert will feature some of the most difficult and exciting music for percussion ensemble that I know of. Instruments will range from the African bull-roarers and afuches to anvils, tin cans, and whips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining the Percussion Ensemble on this concert will be the Chattanooga Boys Choir Cantabile Choir, directed by Vincent Oaks.\u00a0 The Cantabile Choir is composed of Chattanooga Boys Choir alumni whose voices have changed.<\/p>\n<p>Works to be performed include David Gillingham\u2019s \u201cStained Glass\u201d \u2013 a piece inspired by the beauty and color of stained glass, Lynn Glasscock\u2019s \u201cDragoon\u201d \u2013 a bombastic piece for the full ensemble, Ford\u2019s \u201cStubernic\u201d \u2013 a piece for three players at one Marimba, Burritt\u2019s \u201cDoomsday Machine\u201d \u2013 named after an episode of Star Trek!, Green\u2019s \u201cFluffy Ruffles\u201d \u2013 a piece for solo xylophone with a quartet of percussion accompanists, and for a closer, Udow\u2019s \u201cAfrican Welcome Piece\u201d \u2013 based on traditional Ghanian dance rhythms and song styles this piece employs the Choir and six African bull roarers.<\/p>\n<p>The UTC Percussion Ensemble is directed by Dr. Monte Coulter. The concert is open to the public and free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/performance_ensembles\/choralvocal_php\/MensChorus.php\">Men\u2019s Choir<\/a>, directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/faculty_staff\/carter_roland.php\">Roland Carter<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/performance_ensembles\/choralvocal_php\/WomensChorale.php\">Women\u2019s Chorale<\/a>, directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/faculty_staff\/harris_lee.php\">Lee Harris<\/a>, will perform a variety of choral music individually and combined. Additionally the two choirs will be joined by the Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Ensembles from the Center for Creative Arts High School, directed by Neshawn Calloway. All of the choirs will combine to perform Mozart\u2019s \u201cAve Verum Corpus\u201d and Roland Carter\u2019s \u201cRise, Shine for the Light Is a-Coming\u201d with UTC graduate soloist, Varanda Bell, soprano.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Men\u2019s Choir selections for the evening is the Paranjoti \u201cDravidian Dithyramb,\u201d a southern Indian style raga sung on nonsense syllables, Uzee Brown\u2019s spiritual \u201cJohn Was a Writer,\u201d \u201cShenandoah\u201d arranged by Marshall Bartholomew (celebrated composer\/arranger for the Yale Glee Club), and the rousing \u201cLet Them Hear You\u201d from the musical <em>Ragtime<\/em>. The Women\u2019s Chorale will perform contemporary composer Paul Ayer\u2019s \u201cCantate Domino,\u201d a setting of \u201cThe Lord\u2019s Prayer\u201d by Edwin Gerschefski (father of former Music Dept. Head Peter Gerschefski), Faure\u2019s radiant \u201cCantique de Jean Racine\u201d and Nick Page&#8217;s &#8220;Niska Banja.\u201d\u00a0 Both groups will use First Centenary\u2019s fine organ to accompany several pieces.<\/p>\n<p>For further information contact the UTC Music Department at 423-425-4601 or visit our website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/music\/\">http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symphonic Band Concert<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the direction of Dr. Stuart Benkert, UTC Director of Bands and Assistant Director, Dr. Erika Schafer, the UTC Symphonic Band will perform on Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall at the UTC Fine Arts Center (corner of Vine and Palmetto Sts.) and is open to the public free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Benkert describes this program as \u201cthe most varied program yet\u201d for the UTC Symphonic Band. Highlights of the program include John Philip Sousa\u2019s march, \u201cThe Picador\u201d and Darius Milhaud\u2019s \u201cSuite Francaise for Band.\u201d Dr. Schafer will conduct the band in Howard Hanson\u2019s \u201cChorale and Alleluia.\u201d A special treat for the close of the concert will be Mayhew Lake\u2019s transcription of Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>1812 Overture<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sousa\u2019s \u201cThe Picador\u201d was written during one of his most prolific time periods, from 1888-1890. Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>1812 Overture<\/em>, perhaps one of the world\u2019s most overused pieces of symphonic music for any Fourth of July Celebration, is given a faithful representation in Mayhew Lake\u2019s transcription making for a dramatic and rousing close.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/performance_ensembles\/instrumental\/SymphonicBand.php\">UTC Symphonic Band<\/a> is one of the major instrumental ensembles in the UTC music department, existing to provide an advanced instrumental opportunity for music majors and non-majors. The repertoire consists of classic pieces of the wind band repertoire, as well as transcriptions of symphonic works.<\/p>\n<p>For further information contact the UTC Music Department at 423-425-4601 or visit our website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/music\/\">http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamber Singers and Chattanooga Singers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Ford, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/performance_ensembles\/choralvocal_php\/ChamberSingers.php\">UTC Chamber Singers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Academic\/Music\/performance_ensembles\/choralvocal_php\/ChattanoogaSingers.php\">Chattanooga Singers<\/a> will offer a concert on Friday, April 17 at 8 p.m. in the Second Presbyterian Church, 700 Pine St., Chattanooga.\u00a0 The concert is open to the public and free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>This concert will contrast early music with contemporary choral works.\u00a0\u00a0 The newly renovated sanctuary at Second Presbyterian will allow the performance of several works that benefit from an antiphonal arrangement of the choirs. The Chamber Singers will perform some of the music from their recent recruitment tour to Memphis and both groups will reprise selections from the February 2009 Music Department Alumni Reunion concert.<\/p>\n<p>Included on the program for the evening are several madrigals and motets representing the \u201cGolden Age of A Cappella Choral Music,\u201d the 1600-1700s. Among these are Gibbon\u2019s \u201cSilver Swan,\u201d Estes\u2019 \u201cHow Merrily We Live,\u201d Tallis\u2019 \u201cIf Ye Love Me,\u201d and Victoria\u2019s \u201cO Magnum Mysterium.\u201d A unique piece among this set \u201cPastyme with Good Company\u201d is believed to have been composed by England\u2019s King Henry VIII. Parry\u2019s magnificent double choir anthem \u201cI Was Glad\u201d brings us into the age of accompanied choral works.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the program will be four master choruses from the great choral major works of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods: Mozart\u2019s \u201cAve Verum Corpus,\u201d the first movement of Vivaldi\u2019s jubilant <em>Gloria<\/em>, the majestic \u201cHallelujah\u201d from Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em>, and Mendelssohn\u2019s soothing \u201cHe Watching over Israel\u201d from <em>Elijah<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The 20th and beginning of the 21st century have yielded many interesting and beautiful choral works, including two by American composers: Norman Dello Joio\u2019s tour de force for piano and chorus, \u201cA Jubilant Song\u201d and David Dickau\u2019s breathtaking setting of Sarah Teasdale\u2019s poem \u201cStars I Shall Find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford has a particular interest in the choral music of Eastern European composers and he presents it in two newer works: \u201cUnicornis Captivatur\u201d by Norwegian Ola Gjeilo\u201d and \u201cBenedictio\u201d by Estonian Urmas Sisask. To close the concert the combined choirs perform Roland Carter\u2019s triumphant arrangement of \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford is the Director of Choral Activities at UTC. Johan Sentana is the accompanist for both groups. David Friberg will appear as guest organist for this concert.
