Two dozen students brought their helping hands and strong backs to Crabtree Farms where they volunteered March 12-14 during UTC\u2019s Third Annual Alternative Spring Break.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Established in 1998, Crabtree Farms, works to bring urban sustainable agriculture to Chattanooga. \u201cThe mission of Crabtree Farms is to connect Chattanoogans with our local food shed.\u00a0 Crabtree Farms serves the greater Chattanooga community through education and advocacy programs that teach about growing food sustainably and choosing local produce,\u201d according to the Crabtree website.<\/p>\n

UTC students helped at Crabtree in a variety of ways.\u00a0 They prepared the ground for a four-year crop of asparagus, helped in the hot house, and planted Pawpaw trees at Crabtree Farms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goals of UTC\u2019s Alternative Spring Break are to respond to the needs of our community through service and volunteerism, to develop an understanding of the impact of our contributions to society, and to enrich leadership and team-building skills among our participants,\u201d said Carol Oglesby, Coordinator of Student Civic Engagement and Physical Health Education and Promotion.<\/p>\n
