Dr. James Hill Craddock, Robert M. Davenport Professor in the UTC Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, will present \u201cA Tree Crop Archetype: \u00a0the American chestnut\u201d on April 2nd<\/sup>, at 4 p.m. in the University Center in the Chickamauga Room. Craddock\u2019s web page states \u201cThe goal of the Chattanooga Chestnut Tree Project is the restoration of the American chestnut to the Southern Appalachian and Cumberland Plateau Regions. The return of the chestnut to its place in the forest canopy requires a two-part plan of action: research on biological control of the chestnut blight disease and breeding the trees for disease resistance. A secondary goal of the Project is to provide support for the establishment of a commercial chestnut industry (for nut production) based on improved cultivars.\u201d<\/p>\n

This event is free and open to the public.\u00a0 It is sponsored by the UTC Chapter of Sigma Xi, the honor society of research scientists and engineers.<\/p>\n
