\u201cWe\u2019re all on the same journey together.\u00a0 So we should wave to each other as we pass,\u201d director Gaye Jeffers says of the themes of Middletown<\/i>, a new play by Will Eno being presented at the Ward Theatre in UTC\u2019s Fine Arts Center April 9-13.The show runs April 9-13 at 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.\u00a0 Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.\u00a0 Tickets are available at the Fine Arts Center\u2019s box office, phone number (423) 425-4269, or online at www.tickettracks.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jeffers\u2019 approach to the play reflects the charm and humor that embodies this intellectually engaging play.\u00a0 Witty banter, profound and quirky, abounds in Middletown<\/i>, winner of the Horton Foote Prize.\u00a0 This prize is only one of the many awards that playwright Will Eno has collected over the past few years.\u00a0 Other awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Oppenheimer Award and it was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.\u00a0 Middletown<\/i> has been produced by the Vineyard Theatre in New York and Steppenwolf in Chicago.\u00a0 UTC Theatre Company\u2019s production will be one the first University productions of Middletown<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all newcomers, visitors and tourists of one sort or another,\u201d Jeffers remarks.\u00a0 \u201cOne of my favorite lines in the play states that \u2018just because we don\u2019t look like pilgrims doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re not pilgrims.\u2019\u00a0 To me, this sums up the play.\u00a0 We are all on a journey, traveling to a holy place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Middletown<\/i> is, in some ways, a tribute to Thornton Wilder\u2019s classic play \u201cOur Town.\u201d\u00a0 The difference:\u00a0\u00a0 instead of looking microscopically at small town America, Eno gives us a telescopic look at our place in the world.\u00a0 Middletown<\/i> is neither quaint nor homespun, but it is still America.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important for our students to be doing works by current playwrights,\u201d says head of UTC Theatre Department Mac Smotherman, who is also acting in the play.\u00a0 \u201cOur audience also wants to keep up with the latest and best.\u00a0 Will Eno certainly is one of the best playwrights out there today.\u00a0 He gives the actors such great language to dig into\u2014and to have fun with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Middletown<\/i> is populated with iconic characters from today\u2019s America.\u00a0 Besides Smotherman, the cast includes:\u00a0 Madeleine Young, Grace Holtz, Kaleb Moran, Austin Blackburn, Nicole Pavol, Charlotte Grater, Kinnawa Kaitibi, Maggie McNulty, Mario Hoyle, Rebecca Rouse, Megan Cobb, Gregory Jackson, Troy Jensen, Kristina Lumm, Jordan Coleman, Garrett Henson, Kimberly Skoda, Erin England, Gaby Dixon, Trevor Miles, Mariah Driver and John Nichols.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
