The Sunday before President Barack Obama arrived in Chattanooga on Tuesday, July 30, Amazon executives approached UTC communication alumna and Amazon employee Lydia Flanders \u201806 and asked if she wanted to introduce the Chief Executive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to do it, YES, I\u2019ll do it,\u201d Flanders replied immediately.<\/p>\n

She only had a few days to write the speech and to be nervous.\u00a0 \u201cI wasn\u2019t nervous about the speech, my nerves were about meeting President Obama.\u00a0 I wanted to meet him, and I knew when I did, everything would be fine,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

On the big day, Flanders made sure her three young children were in the audience, as was her husband, who, like Flanders, worked his way into a leadership position in Amazon. \u00a0\u00a0She waited backstage, her hands clutching her notes.\u00a0 President Obama rounded the corner with a big smile and said, \u201cHey, Lydia!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing that came out of my mouth was, \u2018Can I have a hug?\u2019 and he gave me a big hug!\u00a0 We talked about family and chatted for a few minutes.\u00a0 Then it was time for me to go on stage, and the President said \u2018Break a leg!\u2019\u201d Flanders said, smiling.<\/p>\n

As her story poured out on the stage before her Amazon colleagues, reporters, and invited guests, Flanders\u2019s explained that both she and her husband lost their jobs during the recent recession.\u00a0 They \u00a0were hired as seasonal workers at the facility in 2012 and soon were promoted.\u00a0\u00a0 Flanders described what happened in her life to provide encouragement for anyone else who may be struggling, she said.\u00a0 The crowd responded with many rounds of applause.\u00a0 She introduced President Obama, who gave her another hug onstage.<\/p>\n

When she waded into the crowd, the first thing a colleague told her: \u201cyou\u2019re a rock star.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have asked me to autograph the newspaper.\u00a0 My speech was on YouTube.\u00a0 People have contacted me on Facebook from other countries,\u201d Flanders said<\/p>\n

When the President met Flanders\u2019 daughter, whose name is pronounced the same way as his daughter\u2019s, he asked Maliyah Flanders to stand by him for a picture taken by a White House staffer.\u00a0 The four-year-old was happy about that, because she told her mother she wanted the President to know her name.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis entire experience has been unreal.\u00a0 Very exciting, very humbling,\u201d Flanders said.<\/p>\n
