Funded Proposals (12\/1\/2013 \u2013 12\/31\/2013)<\/b><\/h3>\n

CONGRATULATIONS!<\/b><\/h4>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff recently attracted <\/i><\/b>$249,231 i<\/i><\/b>n external grant and contract awards:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Mr. Joel Baxley<\/b>, Director of Visual Art Education at UTC\u2019s Southeast Center for Education in the Arts<\/a>, secured $5,000 from South Arts to expand an evaluation of the quality of in-school arts education programs in the Southeast region. The project, which originally involved six states, will now include Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Ms. Catherine Kendall<\/b>, Associate Professor of Interior Design<\/a>, attracted $2,160 from the Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners to purchase equipment for the Interior Design Department. Funds will be used to develop a design studio for senior courses and capstone projects.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Yu Liang<\/b>, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering<\/a>, in collaboration with Central State University, secured $17,500 from the National Science Foundation to support a graduate student in the 2013-2014 year. The student\u2019s research will focus on sensor-oriented information systems.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. John McCormack<\/b>, Station Manager of WUTC-FM<\/a>, attracted $124,369 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for a Radio Community Service project. The funds will be used to purchase programming for the radio station.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Mbakisya Onyango<\/b>, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering<\/a>, attracted $40,518 from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, in collaboration with UT Knoxville, to investigate the best potential combination of an open graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixture in flexible pavement design.\u00a0 OGFC pavements last longer, perform better, and improve wet weather driving environments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Joseph Owino<\/b> Department Head and UC Foundation Associate Professor of Civil and Chemical Engineering<\/a>, secured $24,347 from the Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners to purchase equipment for the Civil Engineering Department. Funds will be used to purchase electronic devices, software, and equipment to enhance active student learning at the junior and senior levels.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The SimCenter<\/a> Research Team<\/b> attracted $18,833 from CHI Engineering to perform physics-based simulations of potential LNG spillage over dike walls. In a second proposal, the Research Team <\/b>attracted $5,297 from Cormetech Inc.<\/b> to perform physics-based computations on an air pollution control device.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Amye Warren<\/b>, Patricia Obear Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology<\/a>, secured $11,207 from United Way of Greater Chattanooga to continue services for Project Ready for School and Child Care Consortium. This grant will provide funds for a graduate student and an adjunct in 2014.<\/p>\n

Submitted Proposals (12\/1\/2013 \u2013 12\/31\/2013)<\/b><\/h3>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff members submitted proposals with the potential to generate over $45,977 <\/i><\/b>in external funding, if awarded:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Dr. Susanne Burgess<\/b>, Mr. Joel Baxley<\/b>, and Ms. Laurie Melnik<\/b>, (Southeast Center for Education in the Arts<\/a>) requested $1,000 from Hamilton County Department of Education to conduct a workshop for the faculty of Red Bank Elementary school. The topic will be \u201cIntroduction to Arts Integration.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Lucien Ellington<\/b> (School of Education,<\/a> Center for Reflective Citizenship, and UTC Asia Program<\/a>) requested $25,000 from the Apgar Foundation for the implementation of two teacher institutes by the Center for Reflective Citizenship and the enhancement of UTC\u2019s annual Constitution Day Lecture in 2014. The proposed topic for the Constitution Day Lecture 2014 is \u201cThe Constitution and the Larger Culture,\u201d and the proposed institutes will focus on \u201cAmerican Politics and Citizenship: Past, Present, and Future\u201d and \u201cAmerica\u2019s National Interests and US Foreign Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ms. Laurie Melnik<\/b> (Southeast Center for Education in the Arts<\/a>) requested $19,977 from the Community Foundation to support a professional development program for K-5th<\/sup> grade arts specialists and literacy teachers. The program will enable 12 elementary school teachers to participate in a week-long summer institute, three half-day workshops in the fall, and a book study, and develop electronic portfolios through which student work will be assessed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
