CONGRATULATIONS!<\/b><\/h4>\n
The following UTC faculty and staff recently attracted <\/i><\/b>$131,363 i<\/i><\/b>n external grant and contract awards:<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n

Mr. Joel Baxley<\/b>, Director of Visual Art Education at UTC\u2019s Southeast Center for Education in the Arts,<\/a> secured $40,000 from South Arts to evaluate the quality of in-school arts education programs in six Southeastern states. The SCEA will develop and implement a qualitative study in order to provide knowledge and insight for advocacy and policy development in the region.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Jennifer Boyd, <\/b>Assistant Professor of Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences<\/a>, attracted $5,812 from environmental engineering firm S&ME, Inc. to transplant 85 endangered large-flowered skullcap plants to a protected habitat in the Enterprise South Industrial Park in Hamilton County. The plants must be moved from their current location to avoid being affected by upcoming TDOT construction.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Lauren Ingraham<\/b>, Professor of English<\/a>, <\/b>secured $74,958 from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for a teacher professional development program titled \u201cBuilding \u201cFriendly Conspiracies\u201d: Using Reading and Writing to Reinforce the Common Core State Standards in 9-12 Math and English Classes. \u201dThe program will serve both math and English teachers from six counties: Blount, Hamilton, Marion, McMinn, Rhea, and White.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The<\/strong>\u00a0SimCenter<\/a><\/b> Research Team<\/b> attracted $10,593 from SmartTruck Systems, LLC to perform flow simulations of drag reduction devices.<\/p>\n

Submitted Proposals (10\/1\/2013 \u2013 10\/30\/2013)<\/b><\/h3>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff members submitted proposals with the potential to generate over $612,530 <\/i><\/b>in external funding, if awarded:<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n

Dr. Susanne Burgess<\/b> (Southeast Center for Education in the Arts<\/a>) requested $52,688 from Tennessee Higher Education Commission to support a professional development program for 6 \u2013 12th<\/sup> grade literacy and arts teachers. This project will allow 40 Hamilton County teachers to deepen their understanding of interdisciplinary instruction, strengthen content knowledge, and acquire effective teaching strategies in literacy and the arts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Lucien Ellington<\/b> (School of Education<\/a> and Director of the UTC Asia Program)<\/a> requested $72,917 from the Association for Asian Studies to continue the publication of the Education About Asia Journal in 2014. This journal, founded in 1996, is published three times per year and features issues in Asian studies ranging from ancient cultures and literatures to current events.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Chris Smith<\/b> (School of Nursing<\/a>) submitted a Letter of Inquiry for $486,925 to the Hartford Foundation to support an Adult\/ Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Coordinator as part of a larger initiative related to interprofessional geriatric health care. The initiative will enhance experiential and clinical learning opportunities available to students in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, nutrition, health and human performance, psychology, medicine, and medical anthropology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
