The following UTC faculty and staff recently attracted $713,085 in external grant and contract awards:<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Dr. Jeffery Elwell, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Dr. Jonathan Yeager, Maclellan Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, collaborated with the UTC Development Office to secure $50,000 from the Maclellan Foundation. Maclellan Foundation support will enhance UTC\u2019s religious studies curriculum.<\/p>\n

Ms. Sandy Cole, Director of the Center for Community Career Education (CCCE), attracted $1,500 from the Hamilton County Department of Education to expand the Postsecondary Awareness With Success (PAWS) program to 4th and 5th grade students at Brown Academy during the 2013 spring semester. The students will learn the importance of academic success in elementary school and how that strong foundation will serve them well going into middle and high school.<\/p>\n

Dr. Wilfred McClay, SunTrust Chair of Excellence in Humanities and Dr. Lucien Ellington, UC Foundation Professor of Education attracted $25,000 from the Apgar Foundation to develop a weekend institute sponsored by the Center for Reflective Citizenship. The Institute will take place in the fall of 2013 where scholars and educators will address the theme of \u201cReligion and the Making of American Citizens:\u00a0 Past, Present, and Future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Steve Symes, Associate Professor of Chemistry, attracted $51,565 and Dr. Peggy Kovach, Associate Professor of Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences, attracted $25,102 from the U.S. Army (via the UT College of Medicine-Chattanooga) for research and analysis in support of the development of an innovative medical device. This is the second year of funding for the project, in which Dr. Symes will conduct pharmacological studies while Dr. Kovach will investigate cellular reactions.<\/p>\n

Drs. Li Yang, Associate Professor, Joseph Kizza, Department Head and Professor, Mina Sartipi, Associate Professor, Jack Thompson Professor, and Ms. Katherine Winters, Lecturer, faculty members of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, secured $585,020 from the National Science Foundation to fund scholarships for undergraduates\u00a0 majoring in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. This program will serve as a model for a living learning community at UTC and in STEM higher educational environments and will involve the local business community in the professional development of the scholarship recipients.<\/p>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff members submitted proposals with the potential to generate over $3,680,016 in external funding, if awarded:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Joel Baxley (Southeast Center for Education in the Arts) requested support for two arts residencies at Battle Academy.\u00a0 The first proposal requested $1,200 for a bookmaking residency with third graders, and the second requested $675 for a Sandcasting residency with fifth graders.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ben Byard (Civil Engineering) requested $150,000 from the Tennessee Department of Transportation to develop four new cost-effective concrete mixtures. Dr. Byard will work to insure these mixtures meet the minimum strength and durability requirements of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n

Drs. Pam Carter and Valerie Rutledge (School of Education) requested $265,592 from the Tennessee Department of Education to build data leadership teams within Cleveland City Schools. The project will build a network of school-level data leaders that understand how to interpret and utilize students\u2019 academic data, provide recommendations for addressing deficits, and grow data literacy among their colleagues.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jennifer Ellis (School of Education) Dr. Joseph Kizza and Ms. Kathy Winters (Computer Science and Engineering) requested $599,614 from the National Science Foundation to enhance computer literacy and skills of preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and middle school students. Teachers will learn to integrate computing concepts into the curriculum, attend professional development courses, and create hands-on experiences for their students to apply key computing concepts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Cuilan Gao (Mathematics) in collaboration with the UT College of Medicine \u2013 Chattanooga requested $502,872 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to test a new approach to improving the quality of health care while lowering costs for patients with complex medical and social needs. Dr. Gao\u2019s role in the project will include experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis and interpretation of the results.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cherry Guinn (School of Nursing) requested $235,882 from the Health Resources and Services Administration to provide continuing education for rural public health nurses in northwest Georgia and southeast Tennessee.\u00a0 Nurses within the region will attend a one or two-day conference, and nurses across the country will be able to access the information through online videos.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gregory Heath (Assistant Provost for Research and Engagement), Drs. Nicholas Boer and Diedri White (Health and Human Performance), \u00a0Dr. Micha\u00ebl Bonnal (Economics), \u00a0Dr. Cuilan Gao (Mathematics) Dr. Manuel Santiago (Chemistry) and Dr. Kristen Whitson (Physics), in collaboration with UT College of Medicine – Chattanooga requested $503,014 from the National Institute of Health to promote physical activity and healthy eating lifestyles in low-income Chattanooga adults who are at risk for type II diabetes.\u00a0 The study will utilize both clinical and community-based intervention activities.<\/p>\n

Dr. Nick Honerkamp (Anthropology) requested $1,000 from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to conduct an Archaeological Survey on Ossabaw, Sapelo, and St. Simons Islands, Georgia.\u00a0 This is a continuation of research begun in 2012 and will include total station mapping, GPS, and survey excavations.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mbakisya Onyango (Civil Engineering) requested $59,500 from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, in collaboration with UT Knoxville, to investigate the best potential combination of an open graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixture in flexible pavement design.\u00a0 OGFC pavements last longer, perform better, and improve wet weather driving environments.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chris Smith (School of Nursing) requested $1,048,469 from the Health Resources and Services Administration to increase the diversity of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in the southeast region through the CRNAs in 3D program. The program will provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the opportunity to earn CRNA credentials.<\/p>\n

Drs. Li Yang, Joseph Kizza, and Ms. Katherine Winters (Computer Science and Engineering) requested $204,577 from the National Science Foundation for a multi-institution collaborative project to broaden participation of women and minority students in computer science.\u00a0 The project will impact teachers at three high schools in three states: Tennessee, North Carolina, and Texas.<\/p>\n
