FUNDED PROPOSALS: (10\/1\/2011 – 10\/31\/2011)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

CONGRATULATIONS!<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff recently attracted $128,996 in external grant and contract awards:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Deborah McAllister, UC Foundation Professor in the School of Education, secured $12,750 from the Tennessee Space Grant Consortium for workshops for elementary grades pre-service teachers (UTC education majors).\u00a0 The workshops will be based on mathematics concepts included in NASA educational resources and supported through hands-on problem solving activities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Steve Symes, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Peggy Kovach, Associate Professor of Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences, secured $88,246 from the U.S. Army (via the UT College of Medicine-Chattanooga) to conduct research and analysis, in collaboration with the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga, to assist in the development of a medical innovation.\u00a0 Dr. Symes will conduct pharmacological studies while Dr. Kovach will investigate cellular reactions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mr. Kim Wheetley, Director of the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts, acquired $800 from Bradley County Schools to conduct five professional development workshops in music education.\u00a0 He also secured $1,200 from the Hamilton County Department of Education for a dance residency with first grade students at Battle Academy in December as well $26,000 from the Kids on Stage Foundation of Maury County for another series of mentoring visits and workshop activities with teachers at Mt. Pleasant School this academic year.<\/p>\n

The following UTC faculty and staff members submitted proposals with the potential to generate over $226,555 in external funding, if awarded:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Dr. Carol Brand (School of Education) requested $75,000 from the Tennessee Department of Education to continue UTC\u2019s Become a Special Educator in Tennessee (BASE-TN) Program.\u00a0 BASE TN will recruit and provide financial support for students pursuing special education licensure.\u00a0 Upon completion of the program, participants must commit to teach in a Tennessee public school serving children with disabilities or pay back the financial support that they received.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ms. Meg Kiessling (Mathematics) requested $71,555 from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for a week-long summer professional development workshop for middle grades mathematics teachers.\u00a0 The workshop will focus on the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and will provide a pre-workshop meeting with teachers to determine their needs and expectations as well as a follow-up workshop in the fall.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Deborah McAllister (School of Education) requested $75,000 from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for a professional development workshop for elementary grades teachers to enhance their skills in teaching mathematics.\u00a0 The workshop, titled \u201cNumber and Operations: Emphasizing Fractions, Place Value, and Connections,\u201d is aligned with State Standards and will employ hands-on activities and computer technology.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Jonathan Yeager (Philosophy and Religion) requested $5,000 from the Louisville Institute to conduct research for a book he is editing titled Early Evangelicalism: A Reader.\u00a0 These funds will enable him to travel to various libraries in America and Britain and view rare works and manuscripts for use in the reader.<\/p>\n
